Maybe rock has nothing more to say for Bobby Gillespie - as a jaded, millionaire rock 'star' whose band (who I have dearly loved) haven't produced anything interesting for quite a while. His statement might have more to do with his lack of relevance than the real state of music. I seem to remember hearing that someone from Decca Records told the Beatles that guitar music was 'on the way out' in the 1960's; that rock had become jaded just before Nirvana and grunge hit the airwaves; that guitar bands were passé, then along came The Arctic Monkeys et al. New types of music will come along, and this is a good thing, but that doesn't mean that styles of the past (jazz, rock, country, classical, disco etc...) die out - they continue to evolve. This bass has been a fantastic companion over the years. Mike Tobias has rightfully built up a huge reputation and this bass is testament to it, however it's not getting used as much these days and I'd like to fund some other things (both bass and life stuff need cash and bass direct have pretty much the exact bass I'm looking for on order). I bought it brand new from the Grooveshoppe in 2009, made to order (the build diary will be around here somewhere!), and have been the only owner. This is a wonderfully constructed bass, and plays brilliantly. This wood combinations can generate a fabulous growl, but I think this bass really shines in a lower gain setting - the brightness of the wood combo and rich mids really glow when playing with others. It is a great "all round" bass and can do a great job in pretty much all situations. It hasn't seen too many gigs in all honesty - I was always worried about taking it out of the house - and has been carefully owned and kept in the official leather hard case. It is in as new conditions and I can't find any dings on it. Specs: 2009 build (USA) 35" scale 19mm spacing Ash body Burled walnut top Ash neck Birdseye maple fingerboard (21 fret) Buzz Feiten tuning system with zero fret Bartolini PUs Bartolini preamp Hipshot hardware Matching truss rod cover and pug head Original paperwork etc included. Would be happy to supply any more photos as requested. As I said, this is an amazing bass and I'm not in a huge rush to part ways with it - I'm happy to wait for the right offer, though all will be considered. In terms of trades I'm looking to fund a 6 string Dingwall so any trades for these/6 strings in general will be considered. Also looking for an Origin Effects Cali76 (original large one) and an Axe Fx II (XL/XL+) so would consider a trade + cash for them. Reluctantly up for sale: JPBasses Lucii 6 String Chambered Fretless This is an original JPBasses 6 String that was made by Jean-Philippe Ferreira and his colleague from Paris, France in the early 2000s. JP and his friend built unique high end custom basses and his designs influenced many other young builders. Pete Skjold obtained the rights to his designs and still occasionally builds them under the name “Denoncourt Series” today. JP Ferreira has since moved on to design wooden houses, bikes etc. These basses have become very rare and are hard to find, especially in this condition. I was just reading (on Facebook) the cheery story of one of our bass playing brothers, John VanZanten of Seattle, who about 14 years ago had his dream bass built by Mike Lull Guitar Works. Two weeks ago the bass was stolen, then the thief contacted Lulls in an attempt to sell it to them; Paul Schuster at Lull got photos, verification of the serial numbers etc and convinced the person who had it to bring it in as they had an interest in buying guitars for cash. The guy took it in and Mike Lull seized the instrument advising the thief that the bass was stolen and the guy fled empty handed. Bass has been reunited with the original owner. Brilliant, eh? I doubt you're going to get that sort or after service from Fender.3 points

I have read this thread from start to present end, and have no idea who this Gillespie character is. I thought at first it referred to dizzy of that ilk, but obviously not. Rock ain't dead, it's just no longer at the cutting edge of fashion, an industry which by its very nature needs to aways be finding something 'new'.3 points

I have to disagree. Ten years ago I might have reluctantly grumbled and conceded he might have a point, but there's some really good young rock bands coming through at the moment. Grime and drill may be more en vogue at the moment, but the spirit of rock lives on and is constantly being revived by new generations.3 points

That's exactly what I do with the cobalts!! Easier to dull down bright strings than try a bring a bit of life to really dull strings! I have the same philosophy with my DR high beam rounds! 😁2 points

Let's see... there are plenty of soul / funk / jazz bands out there, so maybe a name that's a little closer to home would work? You could go for something that describes your local area, or references one of your main influences, perhaps? If I knew roughly where you are, I might come up with something witty (or dumb - hard to tell 'em apart sometimes, knowing me). It would be easy to come up with something silly like 'Funk U' but that's a tad cheesy and unoriginal. Why not tell us your main influences and your approximate area? That might give something more to go on. It might help with a logo too, if you're anywhere near a recognisable landmark. FWIW, we're having a similar problem. Our singist fancies D.A.R.E. (for Danceable Alternative Rock in Edinburgh) but I'm inclining towards this:2 points

Now you've mentioned Spotify, according to the Every Noise at Once website (which is an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 3,068 ((!!!)) genres by Spotify), "Rock" is the 5th most popular, with various subtypes appearing further on down in the list. Given this list is generated by data from 100 Million Spotify users (so a pretty large sample size of music listeners), I reckon it gives a more accurate representation of Rocks popularity. Having grown up listening to alternative and hard rock music through the 90s and early 00s I thought I was going to be a rock fan for life. However since becoming a bass player I've really fallen out of love with the genre as I struggle to get excited about Rock baselines (Geddy excluded) Now I'd now much rather listen to funk, soul or blues - rock has most definitely died for me.2 points

For reasons related to geometry, the taper between the front and back depths of the two sides are not linear. You rarely see examples of the shape the sides need to be, but this is a good illustration, with all due acknowledgements to Georgia Luthier Supplies: This is how it will sit in the mould - with the bottom, flat face actually the guitar top: And the two sides cut to approximate shape - they will be sanded to the final shape in the radius dish when I get to that bit: So, all being well. the bending starts in the morning Listen out for the cracking noises...2 points

Things come and go, it's cyclical IMHO. Is R'n'R in a good place? Maybe not.....but there's no doubt in my mind that it will return in some form or another. It was only around 2001 that NME were championing the 'new rock revolution'....The Strokes, White Stripes, etc. I bought a fantastic compilation at the time, 'The Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit' - one of fave compilations ever. I'd never have seen that coming a few years before. So anything is possible....just when it's down and out, doesn't mean it's dead for good. Bobby G, to me, has always been a man of style of any real substance. How he's kept his act alive for so long is beyond me! Maybe his hanging out on yachts with Kate Moss has finally done him in.....or just a good way of promoting your latest record.....? Bloody typical! After all that b*****ks the intonation was fine anyway. The up side was that the method I devised worked really well. It meant that I was able to check it properly this time and if I ever actually have to do it I'll know how. It might come in handy for some of you other smoothies out there, so this is what I did. It's very simple, but it works well. Cut a narrow strip (about 2 mm) of tape and place it as squarely as poss across the neck on the octave as a reference. Instead of holding the string down with your finger, use something narrow and rigid, so that there's far less margin for error. Anything will do, but the Allen key for the truss rod was handy and I used that. Job done. Looks like I answered my own question in the end, but thanks again everyone for your input.2 points

Nah! If Fodera made drills, they'd have 47,000 settings - none of them useful for anything practical; would be made from rare materials that are not resistant to dust & have 'fanned' directional drilling!2 points

No, bigthumb, the problem there is that Dewalt were great when they first came to prominence. Big, powerful and made other duos like Black and Decker look a bit out of date. But then they got lazy and started churning out the same old stuff just to honour their contract. Now there's new kids on the block like Milwaukee and they make Dewalt look like stuff your Grandad used to enjoy. Power tools, rock music, it's all the same.... 🙄2 points

All music gets thrown in the electric juicer of time, and the great bits (of which there are relatively few, even from great bands / artists), float to the top... If I may spam this: Love that bit of sampled bassline from an otherwise crappy rock song.2 points

And the back and sides set has arrived from Germany. Black Limba - beautifully presented and reasonable delivery by Schroter Edelholz. Not expensive either The outside faces are good enough to use directly, so just a case of bringing the thickness down from the supplied 3.5mm to the finish thickness which can all be done from the back faces (out of sight! ) Should be able to start that this weekend2 points

I'm enjoying gigging immensely this time around, and am playing for the pure love of it, originals with my bandmate throughout my career beside me again., and the kid brother of our other bandmate who is no longer with us, feels right2 points

I'd agree that the very worst communications I've had are from the lowest value items, the absolute nadir being when I offered two pretty good sofas for free, the only condition being they were picked up. The number of 'Will you deliver?' messages was in equal parts annoying and depressing. Other than one protracted conversation, the gist of which went: "I'll have those two sofas" "Fine, when do you want to pick them up?" "I haven't got any transport, you'll have to deliver them" "I'm sorry, they're pickup only. Like it says in the ad." "But I haven't got any transport" "Sorry" "But I really want them, i just haven't got any transport." "Well, you haven't got two free sofas then, either." That one was alllll annoying...2 points
