Just got in from a village pub festival in south Oxfordshire. I wasn't really expecting much from it, but it was exceptionally well organised and run, so was a pleasure to play at. Quite a good weekend, overall, and tomorrow's a second 'Sunday' so should be able to catch up with my mates locally down the pub before the wife goes back to work on Tuesday. Which also happens to be her birthday (one of those that have have a zero in them, too) so I've suggested she doesn't make any plans to cook dinner that night!

Close harmonies live always give me shivers too. Alison Krauss and the Union Station do it really well. Also the Sheepdogs, a Canadian "retro-rock" band who deserve to be better known. (good topic, sorry for going ot again!)

Return of the Boom Bap. An old school HipHop underground classic. Great drums/bass line . He starts rapping amazingly at 1.35.. Imo.

I thought quite the opposite; a high level of virtuosity, coupled with a fine sense of timing and an original enlargement of the tonal range of the solo instrument. Full-on admiration of the work accomplished and a very enjoyable listen. Thanks for posting; it goes some small way towards reconciling my ears to the horrors of the original post.

After all the deliberations and colour changes there’s something about it that I don’t like whether it’s the pickguard shape/colour I’m not sure, but I’m going to be putting a new pickguard on it and make it into a P/J instead I’m thinking Orange will look good

Dual-Coil 51 Precision Pickup Ordered one of these from Jess Loureiro. I really like the big bottom end and full-range, fast-attack sound you get from a good 51-style P pickup, but there are times when I'd prefer the enhanced low-mid push and high-mid snap you get from the 57-type split P pickup. I don't want to carry two basses, so I'm hoping the new pickup will give me those enhanced mids, BUT with the fast attack you get from having one pole piece per string. Suh-weet! My plan is to install a toggle switch on the control plate so I can switch between series and parallel, i.e. 57-type and 51-type sounds. Has anyone done this, and what was the outcome..?

hey guys so as people who have seen me post before im a bit of a sucker for Fuzzrocious pedals! for my sound they work...... i get they arent for everyone. just wondering if any else on this side of the pond grabbed a 420 fuzz? as hes doing a second run soon and they are well worth a look! also sticking with fuzzrocious i managed to snag one of there V2 bongripper Overdrive/Distortion pedals which will be coming in early August (wait is going to hurt) its basically a stripped down cat tail and demon in one box with a blend to go between the two circuits also another new pedal/s were my two new bits from solid gold fx, been looking at there if 6 was 9 fuzz for ages as i lamely really liked the name but also all the demos just sound sweet! (well if you like fuzz) then saw a deal happening last month buy a pedal get a free boost! and a custom shop bc183cc if 6 was 9 was reduced so jumped on it and got there bc239 boost for free! the fuzz is wicked but that boost!!!! and together its all kinds of fun! well worth a look if your looking for a boost! and now to a company i love pedal isnt on the board right now due to this board having to do two bands but both these could go on soon! lateral sound have made me customs before but these two are soon to be part of there catalogue the Broot (Bass drive) and Thermite ( fuzz/distortion/noise machine) oh and fyi i wanted the messed up acid finish on the thermite! and finally to the pedal ill be getting as soon as i can get the funds together! the chase bliss Thermae that thing is the sickest sounding pedal ive heard! so crazy and yet super musical at the same time the mini doc on the chase bliss youtube page just totally sold me on it as i was tempted before! there on pre order now so hopefully will be able to sort something soon.

Probably in my top 10 favourite Jazz Funk record's. Jimmy's bass playing is just way out there groove. Ferrante's keys are just fantastic...Bobby Lyle on Piano. I had never heard groove like this before until I heard this and mezzoforte

Favourite song in our current set is Crazy Train. We all nail it and it always goes down well.

The Irish folk band im on we do a version of Gulf coast highway. It's not the bass line. it's the audience reaction when our harmonies come together both vocally and the violins. It sends shivers up my spine.

My 'favourite' changes from week to week, but (bearing in mind I am trying to learn 60+ Grateful Dead songs at the moment) is their 'Sugaree'. Really good swing to the rhythm and great changes into the chorus, with some lovely bass work up the dusty end.

I feel for the OP's mate. Couple of things... * If it's choking out on bends it's just as likely to be the neck relief as the action - best he check this before he gives up. And if it isn't the relief it could just be a high fret. Also, if it's a vintage spec neck the 7.5" board radius will always choke out with big bends up at the dusty end unless the action's jacked well high. * Alder / agathis / basswood? TBPH, it's not going to make a huge amount of difference anyway if it's a multi-piece Squier body. Whther it was ash, alder or agathis most people would have to be have to be a total cork-sniffing tone hound to tell the difference blindfold . People go on about alder and ash but afaich there's not much difference, unless it's a shoot-out between some really light, resonant old swamp ash and some boat-anchor alder. Even then the amp and the speaker make more difference than wood types (as the OP's mate has discovered). * I've done the steel trem block thing on a proper Strat and it made a microscopic difference to the sound - nowhere near as much as the difference between setting the bridge to float and setting it flush to the body. * Final thing: He's gone round, played it and walked out the door with it 'as seen'. Very difficult to turn that one around. The other guy claimed it was an alder body; maybe he genuinely thought it was; maybe he's a fibber; hard to prove either way without suggesting the guy's a liar which isn't going to get the Chapman back. Really, I think he's just going to have to suck it up and put some work into the guitar. Caveat emptor.

I didn’t want to do the pickguard white, black, cream, tort etc and so there was only one colour to pick!!

If youre feeling experimental, take a look at artec. They have some pretty decent onboard units.

If you happen to be the sort of person with sufficient taste to get a Yamaha BB P35 then surely a bass of that calibre deserves a Cali 76CB to go with it? But more seriously, I suspect you'll be happy with either comp Mark - several of the guys I know who are very 'committed' comp users have Cali's (actually one of them has two different Cali's!) or the Spectracomp; they seem to be two of the most popular and highly regarded comps used by BCers.

I have both and have owned the Keeley, Diamond, and EBS beforehand. I thought the Cali was the comp I was searching for, with the blend and HPF letting me even out the tone but still let of a lot of low end thump through. But it has been dethroned by the underdog, the Spectracomp. The stock preset at 8-10 o'clock on the dial is just perfect for me. 6 knobs on the Cali was always pretty taxing to dial in just right, just enough rope to hang yourself and too many knobs to think about. The Spectracomp is like someone took the most advanced multiband compressor on the market and got a top studio engineer to tweak dozens of parameters to perfection for typical bass use. They nailed it. No noise that I can detect with the stock preset either (others may vary) unless you crank the compression knob. Last time I A/B'd them, the Cali was noisier in fact, however it wasn't a fair test as there were other things in the chain and the Cali was on a daisy chain with a couple of analog drive pedals. Of course this is but one opinion and there are plenty who will think the Cali slays the TC. You'll only know for sure if you try both out yourself!

I like "Capitalist Disharmony", because I get not 1, but 3 bass solos in it... And "Fight The System" is always in there, wot with it being melodic, then punky, and having a sweary chorus.

I saw (and heard) a great reggae bass player on TV yesterday. He had a headless Steinberger/Hohner (couldn't identify it as it was stickered over the logo) with a properly rounded tone. Helped in no small part by his playing style which was to pluck the strings around the twelfth fret. The effect of plucking hand positioning should not be underestimated - in my experience.

Just got back from a great gig in Peterborough, a proper live music pub with a really appreciative audience. Several local musicians in there watching us, as it was the first time we had played there, a couple of bass players came up at the end and complimented me on my bass tone, it was nice to hear.

So, I've been doing some testing with 2 P pickups (one from a 4 string thomann kit build and the Bill Lawrence P46) and the cheapo big pole J from AliExpress and finally decided on this last one (more on that in my TB thread about this, don't want to hijack too much). Here's a quick pic... Carving was a mix of my Skil rotary tool, chisel, drill, files and sanding (don't have a proper router -nor the plunge adapter for my rotary tool-), still came out very decent. Here are some samples of the 9 different tone settings it now has, in the following order (coil 1 being closest to bridge): - COILS 1 and 2 (STOCK, typical Musicman): parallel, filtered series, series - COILS 1 and 3 (jazzy, sorta'): parallel, filtered series, series - SINGLE COILS: 1, 2, 3 (this last one is the P'ish one, new pickup soloed) EDIT: sounds better explained in vid...

My amp has all the settings at 12 O/C, I plug straight in with no effects and I play my bass, really quite badly. Sometimes my duo partner tweaks one or two of those controls, she doesn't even bother telling me what she's doing anymore. Almost everything else bass related I run past the infinite wisdom and knowledge of the Basschat collective, via that wisdom I've found the perfect bass and the perfect amp for me and I learn so much on here, it's so cool. So I too feel very random and amateur indeed but I also know that if I get in any kind of bass quandary I have this incredible resource to hand... *sheds tear, waves hankie at brave husband from sylvan garden as he heads out over the Channel in a Spitfire* Fade to black during Lark Ascending.

Started cutting and gluing!! I'm going to try to make 2 or 3 of these to try a few different things. First off is a sapele body, wenge veneer and maple top. The maple should look quite good when oiled (I'm hoping!!) Glued up sandwiches.... To make running wires through the body easier, I drill holes before gluing the two halves together. I then insert a straw in the hole to prevent any glue clogging it up when the halves are joined. To ensure I don't drill too far into the body, I draw the rough direction of the hole then mark the length with masking tape on the drill. The side have then been joined Then the outline of the bass is rough cut ready for routing
