Cheers for all the comments. Progress on this has been slow recently - between work and the garage being so cold getting some of the remaining jobs done is taking a while!! I have managed to get a few things done though. I've put the bass together to make sure everything fits, the neck angle is correct etc. Needs a little shim but otherwise went together nicely. Couldn't resist trying it and very pleased with how it plays and sounds. Shame I have to take it to pieces again to finish the frets and build a shim but nearly there!!! Not the best photos, but here's how its looks: Still deciding on a string retainer: And with its sister fretless bass (which also need finishing off - preamp needs fitting) Right, I'm off to take it to bits and finish those frets!! I've always found that the degree of GAS is proportionally related to the number of gigs, i.e., 2 or more gigs a week, no GAS. No gigs, enormous GAS!3 points

I'll start: One of those over the door clothes hanger thingies available from all B&M, Poundland type outlets makes a great cable tidy.2 points

A french light weight classic from the 80´s, my Vigier Passion 2. Under the bridge pickup is the exact date stamp, this bass is from the 15th September 1988. Neck: Carbon PU´s: single coil Benedetis Electronic: 1x volume 1x treble 1x Freq 1x miniswitch (Freq cut,neutral,Freq boost) 1 x PU Selector switch Schaller bridge, tuners and security locks. The colour seems to be unique, at least I have never seen another Vigier in greenburst, while the blueburst finish is almost a standard on these. Amazingly well made, the graphite neck reaches deep into the body up to the pickups. It features Vigier´s active 18V electronics with parametric mids option, and the two fat single coil pickups are strong even in neutral mode. The tone is fat and extremely versatile, the sustain holds on forever. To me it sounds like a Jazz Bass on steroids. The neck is slim and very fast. The frets are in very good condition. The bass is overall in well played good condition, there are some dings and scratches in the finish. Some of the clear coat finish over the silver logo on the headstock has flaked off, I think ist shows on the pics. The important thing for me is the back of the neck, and this is still flawless. The weight is amazing, it´s only 3480 grams. With a strap the balance is perfect, no neck diving on this one. Sunny day so out came the camera. I never learn - in the event an overcast day would have shown it better. hey ho. Ladies and gents, meet my new Jake 5! 3.6kg of 5 string Precision goodness. I ordered BBM to sort of make it a 5 string brother to one of my Squier JV Ps, which is BBM and has some figuring in the neck. So I opted for figured maple all round - yum! - with graphite rods, 45mm at the nut, zero fret. Chambered basswood body, Hipshot hardware, 17mm spacing at the bridge. Passive electronics. Delano PC5 AL/M2 pickup - which has turned out exactly how I wanted with more bite and growl than the Aguilar I had fitted into my MM Sterling 5. I like it so much, in fact, that I have bought one from Adrian to stick into the Sterling to replace the AG-5P 60. For me this was a big deal. I don't spend a lot of money on basses (although I manage to lose a lot - how does that happen?) and after a slightly gone wrong experience importing a Yamaha BB5000 that cost me dearly was a bit wary. But I couldn't be happier with this one. If I were given the opportunity to order another one i would spec it out exactly the same. So probably not worth doing... Anyway, £1500 for the bass, £100 for an SKB hard case (which retails at £130!). Big grin on my face every time I pick it up. Or just look at it, frankly.2 points

Wenge is very nice if you find it flat sawn. This is another one of my basses (which has been an on going project for a long time as I cant decide what finish to use!!) with a wenge top on rippled sycamore. This piece of wenge was once a floor board......2 points

OK, I'll mention the one that most folks know already, just in case someone doesn't - the rubber seal from Grolsch beer bottles make great strap-locks. I use them on all my basses. I see Fender are selling copies now at, if I remember correctly, £2.00 each!! Frank.2 points

That oak has come out well. Nice to see you have provided some nest material for mice in the upper cavity. Will you supply a complimentary rodent or will your client have to furnish a breeding pair of their own? I want to set you on a build with a hamster wheel built in. On stage a suitably deaf hamster would inhabit the wheel and set the bpm for the band depending on how fast it turns its wheel. Can I get a witness for when I file my patent please?2 points

So here are photos of my two...both budget NT models but both are serious players...great tone, great balance and lovely necks. Build quality is amazing...if this is what they do on the budget range the top ones must be unbelievable.... Jooi does anybody know where the serial nos are on the older model?2 points

On the home straight now - the finishing I've spent a bit of time sanding out rough-sanding lines, smoothing curves and starting to get close to the finished neck profile (I'll finally finish that once it's all strung up and playable) and now started the slurry-filling and preparation for varnishing. The figuring on this amboyna simply HAS to have full gloss, so I'm going to revert to Ronsealing the body and tru-oil slurry and buff for the neck. But, I also slurry and wipe with tru-oil before applying the gloss - I find it shows up any missed sanding marks and also produces a wonderful grain-filled base for the gloss coat. Got a bit more to do on the back, but the top is just drying fully before the first gloss coat: The back is almost there - just a touch of sanding work remaining around the control chamber. I will also deepen the hatch rebate before the gloss goes on: Present weight - 3lbs 10oz2 points

Some very interesting replies, thanks. I'm no stranger to the merry-go-round myself. One mistake I made was thinking that every purchase would result in a better instrument/amp than I had before - and logically would be an upgrade. Of course this is not true and results in huge (sometimes overwhelming) buyers' remorse, particularly if you've had to move on a current instrument/amp to fund a newer one. Yes! There is a point at which you have the perfect bass and the perfect amp (for YOU and YOUR purposes). it's just not always completely obvious where that point lies. For myself it was a Fender Road Worn Precision and a Fender Rumble 500 V3 combo. Fairly humble and relatively inexpensive, but absolutely 100% perfect for me and what I do. I have neither.2 points

The Gold White Nylons are very bright for a tapewound (obviously still a little less-so than a round wound), so if I had them on a passive bass, I would tend to agree with you, I'd probably want the White Copper Nylons too. However because I have them on an active bass, I tend to just roll back the Treble anyway, so I'm happy at the moment! You know what? There's really not a lot in it, I haven't had to do anything with the setup of my Precision, it's all sat the same. That said, the gauges are slightly different, I had 45-100 Chromes, whereas the La Bella's are 43-104, so could be to do with that! Am enjoying them a lot so far. The reason for the change is that I put La Bella Gold Flats (not to be confused with the Gold White Nylons) on my Lakland 44-94, which gave me that bright Flats sound, so wanted something more mellow and 'classically' thumpy on my Precision. I really really like Chromes for that brighter flats sound, but with the above setup, means I can get all my strings from the same manufacturer, which is just a lot easier in my head, a single order and all that. That said, the plan with having most basses with Flats or Nylons is that I have to change strings every 5 years at the very most haha. Si2 points

Yeah of course some people are only impressed by the visual and so bands like vt make them go nuts but that's because people are all different. The thing is, for me, the music was very good too. If the music was poor then I'd feel like their performance might be plastering over cracks. Like I mentioned in a previous post - bands that can balance a great musical performance with a good engaging show will always win for me. I absolutely cannot bear seeing a band where members (regardless of what instrument they play) seem disengaged or motionless. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean they all need to be bouncing about. They just all need to have a bit of charisma. It's hard to explain, I mean look at Pino Palladino - he doesn't move much but he looks so comfortable in his own skin and relaxed but he's pretty much always looking up and watching the rest of the band or the audience. He's engaged in the show. You can tell he's enjoying it. He's got stage presence without having to move too much. If you're using "bonkers" then you're probably spending too much time on British forums lol.1 point
