Very sad news. I was fortunate enough to meet him, and spend a memorable few days on the road with him, sharing dressing rooms. The first gig was in Paris, and from the outset he was the most friendly and generous guy you could meet, always chatting and telling us tales of his life and the music industry. We did drink quite a bit of wine together over the course of the next week and a half, and I got in trouble with the promoter once for going out wine shopping for him the night we played Islington Assembly Hall. I fixed his amp in Milton Keynes before the gig, it was just a bad valve, but he said "Rob, you're the man!", and my heart swelled with pride. RIP Cropp.13 points

Recently joined a band (second rehearsal tomorrow) and it's looking like they might want to take on a few pub gigs to just hone the set and performance so,.. Bought a pub cheapy for the usual reasons. I picked up a Classic Vibe Jazz 5 locally. The guy had bought it 6 months previous so I wasn't expecting much with him moving it on that quickly but it still had all the plastic on it. I've also got the original packaging with his name and address on. It stands me in £175 + new strings. Wow, that neck and fret board. Frets perfectly finished, no sharp edges, love the gloss feel, in fact, it reminds me of the 5 string Elite I sold here a couple of years ago. Great sound through my Shuttle 6.0. Plays like a dream with the LaBella low tension flats on. The only down side is, it's on the heavy side but as their set list appears to be just 20 numbers, I won't be standing on a stage for 3 hours. I think these things are only about £300 or so new. Can't believe it for the money.8 points

Evening all. I'm selling this beautiful Zon Bass. This has the lowest action of any bass I have ever owned. It really is effortless to play. The neck is impeccable, as you would expect from such an incredible builder. The finish is so beautiful that the maple is stunning. Before my time, it was fitted with a drop tuner on the E and some new pickups. ( original tuner is in the gig bag). It sounds incredible. I was using it in a 70's/80's funk-pop band. It sounded great. I haven't used it for at least 6 months. I found some blurb The first bolt-on neck bass Zon ever made, this Legacy Standard features a two-piece hard maple body finished in natural. Sandberg California VS4 II Bass A lovely example German made, near new with gig bag. Lightweight with a superb comfy neck and low action. I own three of these and they have consistent quality. They have replaced my usual go to Precision basses for live use as they are ergonomic and easy to play over long gigs. This one comes in Marley Blue with maple board, push pull active circuit. I think the pickups are Delano - they sound like a Precision on steroids and great in a mix. Nice mids and lows. Strings are D’Addario 40-95 and new. Pickup preferred but I can post at buyer’s cost in the UK only. No trades, no offers sorry. Selling as my 70’s Precision isn’t shifting and I need to move some gear on. More pics to follow.6 points -
I really would rather not sell this as I searched for it for years but our impending house move forces sale. 2004 Fender USA jazz deluxe in cherry burst with gorgeous flame male top, gold hardware, block inlays, 22 frets and a big upgrade of an East 3 band preamp. It has the skinniest neck, weighs under 4kg, plays like a dream, is in near mint condition including the gold hardware and comes in the original G&G deluxe case. I bought this bass on here a couple of years ago - NBD thread is here and my initial comments still hold true. I have ended up playing it less than I thought because (1) 3 months later I bought an NG2, and (2) I have ended up on lead guitar in my glam rock project! For anyone unaware, the D-Roc is Dingwall's take on the Gibson Thunderbird bass, but with more flexible pickup options and no neck dive. The scale length ranges from 34in (G) to 37in (E). If you haven't tried a fan-fret before, be prepared to spend at least 15 seconds getting used to it! The electronics are passive and comprise of volume, pickup selector, and tone. This bass has a huge tonal range from the FD3-N Neodymium-magnet pickups but I feel like I want something a bit more conventional-looking for my non-Precision moments. This is a bass that wants to be hit by stage lighting! Modifications The 'scratch plate' sticker has been removed. I have changed the tone cap from 47nF to 100nF for more range on the tone pot. I had a chicken-head knob on the pickup selector switch as it is easier to see/feel where it is (see last photo). I have returned it to stock but I am including the other knob - it is an easy swap, just pull it off (oh please!), no tools required. The bass comes with the originall Dingwall gig bag as pictured, and the Dunlop strap lock attachments to go on your strap - they plug into 2 metal sockets, one by the neck heel, the other in the middle of the back (hence it balances perfectly on a strap). It is currently strung with Elixir Nano Web Nickel Plated 045-105 Extra Long (set E14087) and there is a worn set of black Paysons in the gig bag for emergencies. Condition is as per the photos. There is a small unfilled hole on the back of the headstock where a D-tuner has been fitted by a previous owner. Weight 3.8kg (8lb 6oz). Neck width 43mm at the nut, 56mm at the 12th fret (both measured straight across the neck from the treble side). I'm looking for £1,150 on collection or meet-up. I can travel a reasonable distance from Swindon if it helps, just PM me to discuss. If you prefer to buy new, go to Bass Direct and hand over another £600 in their sale... Im touring in a band currently supporting British Lion - not long come off stage in Manchester. I asked Steve tonight why his new signature bass was black. He explained it was actually white when he got it and immediately had it sprayed Matt Black. I’m guessing it never had the BA bridge on to start with but I’ll ask him if I get the opportunity. He’s got one with him on the tour but it’s unlikely he’ll use it as it’s strung with rounds but I might get the chance to have a go!6 points

Hi Folks, Pending payment now. Like my amps and cabs, I'm sure my basses have been multiplying while my back was turned. I now have too many and I have to thin the herd. Up for sale is my Nordstrand Acinonyx V1 4 string in Lake Placid Blue. This one is not from the original batch and consequently hasn't suffered from some of the issues those had, like the dropping bridge saddles and pickups. The headlines are that it is an extremely light bass, with a 30.7" scale and 1.4" nut. Bridge spacing is 17mm. Combined with the slim neck, it is extremely easy to play and great ergonomically. A great bass for those 3 hour gigs.The Nordstrand made pickups are very powerful and it has a wide range of tonal options. It has quality Hipshot hardware as well. I got a bit fed up of the original push button switches for pickup selection and tone. I liked the concept of being able to get predictable tones at the press of a switch but I didn't much like the execution. I found it particularly difficult to select the series "all-in" option. Consequently I had a new scratch plate made (while pearl) that allowed me to wire it up with a 4 position telecaster switch and a varitone switch for tone. The switch positions are 1. fully forward - both pickups in series ("all-in"); 2. front pickup solo; 3. both pickups in parallel; 4. bridge pickup solo. The varitone switch has 6 positions ranging from off to 0.1 uf. The volume pot is now a full sized CTS 250 k audio taper and the jack socket is a Pure Tone. While I was doing this I took the opportunity to improve the shielding with copper tape in the cavity and back of the scratch plate. It is now a lot quieter than standard. I find this switching and tone arrangement much easier to use than the original. However, these modifications can be easily reversed. I have the original electronics and scratch plate, so the bass can be returned to standard very easily but with improved shielding. If you would prefer, I can return the bass to original spec before posting/collection. You can have the new parts (which cost around £130) as well, or if you opt to keep my mods, I will provide the original parts in the price. I have included a picture of the bass in original spec. The bass is in very good condition. I can't find any marks, dings or scratches on the body and there is only one small ding on the neck, which I have pictured. There are a few scrtaches on the original scrtachplate from using a pick but again, nothing significant. It is fitted with new D'Addario light gauge nickel rounds (45-100). I tried flats on it and they were fun but I prefer the extra bite from the rounds. Nordstrand have stopped making these basses in the Far East, so new ones are going to be US made to order and expensive. You are very welcome to come and try it through various amps at my place in Fakenham (refreshments provided). That may not work for many and I have the original box, so can post at buyer's expense. I can meet up within about 50 miles of Fakenham. I am thinning the herd, so not looking for a trade at the moment.5 points -

One of those powerhouse session guys who played on more hit records in 60s and 70s than you could ever name. One thing I didn't know until reading his obituary is that he co wrote 'Sitting on the dock of the bay' which for most musicians would have been a career peak achievement. For Steve Cropper it was just another day in the office. RIP5 points

It’s amazing that such good instruments can be made for this amount, with the difference in quality between these and their big brothers not being as much as the price tag would suggest. Starter instruments when I began playing really weren’t up to much at all, whereas nowadays these could easily be first but kept hold of and gigged regularly instruments.4 points

This is a great price for an excellent preamp. After trying all sorts (SLO Olympic MKIIIs, OE bassrig BP, DXC Bass, Ampeg SGT-DI, Sansamp VT bass DI), I’ve settled on this one myself. It’s got a flexible eq, a nice ‘edge of breakup’ sound and an fx loop. I use MartinB’s little trick to simulate a 60s cab sound by turning the tilt eq towards the bass side and turning down the actual bass knob. With a touch of drive, this sounds killer! Ibanez is probably your easy off the shelf option and comes in under a £1000. Its fretless but does have lines on the top of the board so technically a lined fretless. It also only comes as a 5 string option. Very good basses and I'd love one if it wasn't lined.4 points

A lovely 1976 Fender precision in 3 tone sunburst In pretty good overall condition, a repaired scratch to the back and a few dents and scratches here and there but nothing too drastic Barring the 2 knobs its all original with chrome covers and original case, catches all work with no rust on them Weight is approx 4.4Kg's Nut width is under 42mm Truss rod works fine both ways Frets in great condition with very little wear The burst is still very vibrant All parts date to 76 Any question please fire away4 points -
Sherwood Green Metallic 8lb 10 oz. Unusual 12 inch radius Rosewood fretboard, satin maple neck, microtilt. TBX pot has been removed & standard tone pot now fitted. Much better imo. Apologies for photos. 1 tiny lacquer crack next to neck, 1 tiny dimple on top chamfer, both circled in yellow on photos. Anything else is reflections. Thinnest worst Fender "gigbag" ever. To answer your question, there are some other Steinway pianos in the Numa Player, the Steinway D is a paid option and is far better than the free ones delivered with the app. I didn't say that the keybed was the same for all Nord and Studiologic, but all coming from Fatar with different models according to the series, just like you mentioned. I love the Steinway Model O, it's a superb grand piano. Concerning the action, here are my thoughts. I had a Studiologic Numa Nero (TP/40 Wood) before the SL88 GT Mk2 and there's are some improvements (triple sensors and double escapement) with the TP/400 Wood, it's really close to a grand piano action wise, at least the ones I had the opportunity to play when I was learning it in a school. I also had a Casio GP-510BP with a Bechstein grand piano keybed and I find that the TP/400 Wood is better, especially the escapement, that was too light on the Bechstein/Casio. That said, I now own a Casio AP-750 and, even if the keybed is still from Bechstein, I find it lighter, more like an upright piano, but the pedals response is far better, just like the new sampling or is it because of the new amplification, but for a real grand piano, the SL88 GT Mk2 is the best to me and superior to the Kawai Responsive Hammer II that I really hated (I sent it back, on the next day, the ES 920 that I just bought for that reason) or the Roland PHA-50. The keybed of the Kawai VPC1 (RM3 Grand II) didn't convince me. I would like to try the Kawai Millennium III Hybrid keybed of the Novus series though...3 points

I'm not sure you need to worry abnout sacrificing the bolts. the T-nuts will be well below the surface you are painting and you could always use blu-tac/chewing gum/plasticine to cover the nut, it's all going to be invisible once the speaker is fitted. I don't really like t-nuts much so I'm shifting to furniture nuts in future the t-nuts sometimes overhang the narrow strip of baffle left once you've cut the speaker hole so I'm hoping these will be neater3 points

I tried a lot of stage pianos before PMT closed their doors. My 2p: The Nords sound good and have great interfaces, the samples are all somehow more musical and characterful than a lot of the competition. But, the nicest Rhodes samples tonally are lacking depth/richness because the samples just aren't big enough. Keyscape absolutely runs rings round them. Likewise, the Steinway D sample shows its age which is a shame because it's nicer tonally than the bigger 'White Grand' (Steinway A). The Yamaha grand sample is better than any of Yamaha's own. One general criticism of the piano samples is lack of 'ppp' samples, they could have a softer tone at the bottom. Hammond sounds great. The key to pricing stability is their sound library, but get a model with resonance modelling. Crap actions on the electro, weighted or otherwise, passable on the stage but far from the best. Yamaha YC/CP: VERY disappointing pianos, just bland digital-sounding. Shame as the organs on YC were good and the interfaces are great. Didn't like the action on the 73 or the 88. Looking at 88 key models which I appreciate you're not sold on: Yamaha p525: much better samples and action vs CP. Good if you don't want all the organ stuff Roland, all the pianos sounded awfully dull except the RD2000 'German Stage' Expansion which was actually good (also nice action). The rest haven't surpassed the old 700NX IMO. Kawaii: pretty good sounds, certainly musical, decent action too (88 note weighted tho). I ended up with an MP7SE. Organ/FX not as good as the Nord but the piano key/sound connection is the best of the bunch. Not light though! Something I'd like to take a punt on, but haven't tried, is one of the Studiologic Numa X - either the 73 or the GT. Demos/reviews of the EPs and the downloadable Steinway D sound superb to my ears. Not sure if they have organ sounds though3 points

I've been doing some nerding on Nord Electro 73 prices new vs second hand: V1, 2001, ? Now £600 V2, 2006 £1,400. Now £900 V3, 2008 £1,500. Now £1,000 V4,2012 £1,600. Now £1,300 V5 2015 £1,700. Now £1,400 V6 2018 £1,900. Now £1,600 It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of financial difference to buy new or second hand if you plan on owning for 10 years then selling as they start to de-value more once they are a few versions old. If fact, buying new is perhaps financially better in some ways. e.g. a 13 year old V4 today = £1,300, in 10 years it'll be worth roughly £700 (if it is ballpark equivilant to a 23 year old V1 price today), so that'll cost £600 for 10 years use. V7 is quite overdue, if history is any guide then it'll be about £2,200 and would be worth roughly £1,700 10 years later, so that'll cost £500 for 10 years of use. A selling point of the Nord is how well known they are and how well they hold their value. I think the Viscount Legend One 73 is still my favorite though (and is a bit cheaper at £1,555), but I imagine that if I went to sell it after 10 years there would be a much smaller market and probably more devaluation than a Nord. But in an ideal world I'll still be happy with whatever I get and it'll last me longer than that.3 points

I have two Monzas but often use just one, they are extremely capable units and every time I’m lugging out after a rehearsal/gig I’m pretty sure I made the right choice over the Monaco…. though it doesn’t stop me wanting one! I have versatility now when needed. I doubt very much you’ll be disappointed . Go for it! X3 points

So, after many weeks of waiting, the black bridge finally arrived from EB in the USA. FINALLY! One added bonus is that Anderton's haven't said anything about returning the old bridge so I am going to hang onto that for now and if I don't hear anything for a few weeks, then I will look to re-claiming some of the ridiculous amount of money the bridge cost me! Just fitted, re-strung and a (very quick so will need further adjustments) setup means this project is finally finished. I'm very pleased with the final outcome and it certainly is now very much a one off in it's own right. the black hardware really adds to the look of the bass IMO and with the black scratchplate and knobs, against the washed open pore polished finish, it really works for me. Like may SR5s it is a bit heavy but I think this one may stick around for a little while now. looking forward to giving it a proper go very soon.3 points

So after 3 months of waiting it’s arrived, I custom ordered a Precision Bass by Luca at Alnus Basses. (Insert joke about name here) There wasn’t an awful lot of information about them on the web, so set about tracking down owners across social media outlets, general consensus was he made lovely basses. I’ve always wanted a lime green metallic P Bass but Fender custom shop prices were out of reach for me especially when buying blind. I contacted Luca and gave him the specs I wanted and went through step by step with him in regard to colour shades/pickguard colours etc. I liked the fact he made the necks and bodies out of raw materials rather than pre made husks of the shelf, all paint/relicing and pickups were done in house and I liked the thought of a bass being built in a lovely Italian village (My family originates from Italy so this was a little piece of Italy). So for the result, it’s beautifully made and very resonant! The colour may not be to everyone’s tastes but I’m really happy with it, it needed a little setup to get it how I wanted it and it’s lovely. Just waiting for amp to warm up before plugging it in, if the pickup isn’t my bag I have a couple laying around including a Fender PV60 and Seymour Duncan Quarterpound. I will more than likely fit a badass 2 bridge to it aswell which I have spare.2 points

Up for sale is this very nice Yamaha QY700. This one has a bright upgraded screen, all buttons working and flawless operation. It's also upgraded with a GOTEK drive to store as many sequences as you can throw at it. It's pretty much future-proofed for a good while. A rock solid workhorse, this is a great centrepiece for a DAWLess set up. Only selling as I have another sequencer that's smaller This is a great piece of classic tech. Famously used by Squarepusher. It's a lovely sequencer with a tweakable GM library (but I only use it to drive external gear)- very powerful and solid as a rock timing-wise. Perfect for those who want to get away from screens.2 points -
Up for sale is my 45 year old 1980 Fender Precision Elite in excellent condition with the exception of one lacquer ding on the bottom edge. Set up beautifully it weighs in at a meaty 4.3kgs, has a wider profile 44mm neck but somehow plays brilliantly Features are single split coil pickup, active boost electronics, schaller fine tune bridge, and gold hardware which is in remarkably good nick for a 45 year old. Comes in an equally vintage and robust hard case. I'll be sad to see it go but our impending house move forces a bit of a clear out. Can meet up within an hour of The Wirral or deliver anywhere (surely no courier could penetrate this case and even if they did, the bass would fight back.....)2 points -

Sunburst 2500 in suburst/maple board with original case and certificates. The odd lifemark - only thing of significance is a dent/scrape on the bottom edge (see photo, bear in mind the battery compartment screw for size). Neck all happy. Can do it in a G&L gig bag for £950 if that helps - or can add that for another £50. Sending is no problem - I'm famous for my packing. P/X/swaps considered. I was so impressed with Alan's willingness to chat endlessly about ideas and alternatives, completely happy to alter his existing designs to accommodate whatever mad ideas I might have had. My Krell fretless has a mahogany central block and ash wings, an idea that came from my MM 20th Anniversary SR5, Alan just said "sure" and got on with it. The quality of his work is second to none.2 points

This is a traditional Marshall 15", 150 Watts combo. This is the earlier British built B150, not the later foreign built MB150 First the bad news: No light weight speaker, no Class D amplifier, so it comes in as 35Kg (and is quite big). Exterior is a bit battered, but nothing major. Apart from that if it is all positive. This is fully functional (just checked it) and would be ideal for "fixed" installation such as a studio or practice room, as a fixed backline in a pub or something, or for a younger man than I now am!. This served me well as my main stage amp for many years, and was the first time I experienced actual trouser flapping! Sealed cabinet which has since been stuffed (by me) with wadding. Side handles were added by me due to the weight. 150 (Marshall) Watts as it stands, with no possibility for extension cabs. To me the main feature of this combo is that it has a real valve pre-amp, which makes a really noticable difference to the tone - so much so that the blend knob (between valve & SS) is actually useful. Not like some modern units with valve pre amps that seem to make bugger all difference. Inputs for Active & Passive basses. SS/Valve Blend control Bass and treble controls 7 Band Graphic EQ Deep and Bright Buttons Switchable limiter In-built compressor NO remote control possibillities however. Attached manual details the controls. Note that the original handle has one of its end covers missing. Due to its weight: COLLECTION ONLY, but that gives you the chance to try it out. NOTE THAT: As part of the clear out I will soon be listing: Laney 100W 15" combo. Behringer BEQ3012 two channel 32 band equaliser with feedback detection. Two Shermann PA cabinets (15" + 6" + tweeter). Seriously professional bits of kit. 12 + 4 15m Snake cable/box 12 + 4 25m Snake cable/box Behringer FBQ6200 32 band, 2 channel equaliser with feedback detection.
