  1. Last night was the Victoria pub jam in Wokingham, which I think has been running on Thursdays for more than a decade. An enthusiastic group of core musicians - which is expanding - maintains house band duties and rotates, which means it feels fresh, and it's starting to attract - gasp - Gen Z (!!) - I know, I can't believe it either, until fairly recently all the jam nights I went to were pretty much my age (I can still pogo at 55!), but there's teens and twenty somethings taking the stage, and I'll tell you - some of them are excellent. Reading has a pretty active prog rock thing going on, and they're all young as anything! Anyway - I got pulled into 3 bands for the night, which is damn good, some great tracks. Highlight as ever was Let's Dance by Bowie - I LOVE the bass on that track. Bass was the Maruszczyk 5-string, and it absolutely nailed it, sounding amazing after the truss rod replacement earlier this year - this thing is now perfect! Effects was a cheap little AnnBlackBox from M-VAVE with the chocolate 4-button wireless controller - and you know what? It worked pretty well, especially as a quick setup system. Total cost of that system? A stripped down version of the Stomp HX for £75 all in including the 4-button switch, all running on batteries so no need to hunt for a PSU or use a full sized board. I'm warming to it for jam nights! Weirdest track I played was "the stealer" by free - check this bassline out, it's bonkers: The landlord has invested properly in live music - the pub's had a new PA this year, new bigger desk and speakers mounted on the walls which saves a lot of space. The venue also owns good kit for bass, guitar and drums. I think that makes a huge difference to the musicians running the event.

  2. Royal Blues at The Troubadour, Earls Court, that London. 4 bands, though not remotely similar. Pretty much a capacity crowd, not bad for a Thursday night. We were up for it, lots of friends and family in the (paying) audience. Played two new songs, which went down well. The house bass rig was an Orange 4 stroke bass head and Orange cab. I set everything flat with the compressor half way. It sounded glorious. Ibanez UB804 -> Airbridge wireless -> Orange 4 stroke bass amp -> Orange cab. Footwear -> Maroon brothel creepers.

  3. My collection of "big iron" amplifiers. All still working perfectly. The Hartke was my gigging amp throughout the 90's and if my circumstances changed, I'd happily use it again, until death do us part.

  4. Somehow, over the last half a century, 10cc have escaped my attention. Of course I was aware of them, and some of their tunes, but it's only the last few weeks I've realised what a rich seam they are / were. Wonderful writing, arranging, performances, lyrics and artwork. Feel The Benefit is the soundtrack to my life at the mo, and it even has a bass solo around the 9:20 mark. Graham Gouldman is a hell of a player.

  5. Everyone knows what these wee beasties are - future classic I reckon, but it's just not for me. Honestly, it's too lightweight for me, but that'll please some folk around here. It's 3.4kg/7.5lbs according to the bathroom scales. This one is in fair condition, some wear and tear in the shape of dings and buckle rash in the back, better round the front. All original hardware (bridge and Gotoh tuners) with the original SGC pickups (PJ) but inside is a Glockenklang 2 band EQ, meaning it is switchable passive/active (push/pull volume pot) and retains a passive tone control in passive mode (treble pot). Best of both worlds! Full disclosure - there's a chrome bridge intonation screw in there which should be black - when I acquired it there was a screw in there which did work, but the head was too big and it stuck out the back of the bridge. I found a replacement screw which did fit in the bridge properly, but couldn't find a black one. You can't really see it unless you go looking - the black spring does disguise it somewhat, but I don't want anyone to have a gotcha moment. Anyway, it's a fine wee bass with some wear and tear, and pretty lightweight which might suit some folk, just not me. Recently restrung with a fresh set of D'addario XL nickel rounds 45-105. Looking for £200 for it. Prefer local sale (Aberdeen) but will post at buyer's expense if needed.

  6. I've been gassing for a 5 string for ages and finally decided to bite the bullet. My only other bass is a 97 Jazz Bass Deluxe that I ordered and paid off and cost more thany first car! I love this bass and for 28 years have only bought one other, when I arrived in London and bought a super cheap squire jazz (which was ace, but got stolen!). I was looking for anything with a humbucker and maple fretboard, only as something different to what I already have. I looked at things like scale length and string spacing but thought 'i don't really have any reference points', so I wasn't picky. I was looking for Yamaha or Ibanez 5ers, but my budget was so limited. Anyway, I bought this: SX SW1B. It's a copy of a Warwick, or a Spector, or both (or neither!) and it's pretty decent.

  7. Hi folks, for sale is my Alembic Brown Bass from 2017 bought new at Station Music, Germany in 2019. I have to thin out the herd and that‘s why I want to sell some basses. After years of buying, selling and trading it‘s time to "settle down" with just a 2 or 3 basses. This bass is in very good condition, besides a few tiny dents as you can see in the pictures. Electronics and truss-rod work with no issues. Comes with the original case and certificate. Over the last decades Alembic have learned to built basses that are much more ergonomic than the older one. And in my honest opinion that‘s the main advantage in constrast to the older ones. My bass weights 4,1 kg only and has no neck diving. Pick up is preferred. Maybe we can meet in person somewhere on half distance. If you need more pictures let me know. No warranty, no return and no guarantee because I am a private seller. But all informations is provided to the best of my knowledge and belief. I am open to trades, but there are only a few basses that I am interested in. Maybe Adamovic 6 String, Mattison 6 String; Ken Smith BSR 6 String, Alleva Coppolo, Stenback, but you can try to lead my into temptation. Shortscale: 30,75# Body: Walnut Top und back Laminate: Myrthe Neck woods: Mahagony-Walnut Fingerboard: Ebony Oil finish Mother of Pearl inlays Electronics: 2 AXY Pickup Red-Orange Side-LEDs Including case. No neckdiving 4,1 kg. Price is 8000 Euro, trading value 8500 Euro. New prices are becoming more insane every year and are about 15.000-16.000 Euro at the moment.

  8. Hi all, I have a BBP35 that I absolutely love. There was just one thing that kinda bothered me with the bass and it was the tone knob (pot). It is not bad at all but, for me it always felt like almost as an On/Off thing. From all the way off, If I turned it more than 15% it was just high frequency with little difference to my ears. I thought I had a bad one but, I’ve heard the same from other owners too. After many emails exchange with the guys from StellarTone I decided to change it and I think I did one of the best mods you can make to these PJ style basses. The Vol, vol, tone was swapped for a Vol with push/pull for series parallel, a blend and a ToneStyler bass 10 tone pot. The bass completely changed and has a vast array of tonal possibilities, best thing it is all passive! I’ve recorded a quick video demo. If you are interested please let me know and I’ll share more detail.

  10. Just spotted this (via Danny Sapko). A LeCompte 31.18" scale (very precise?) but with a reverse headstock. Having never played a bass with a reverse headstock, does it have a noticeable impact on string feel/tension? I know some complain about the lower strings on short scales feeling a bit off.

  11. It's a week to go folks! On the catering front... As previously mentioned, we plan to do a run to Costco on Friday to pick up some snacks; probably a couple of their ridiculously large cakes, some cans of pop, bottled water, some crisps, tea & coffee. Plus paper plates, cups, napkins. We'll do a £1 honesty box for items and the aim will be to cover costs, with the remainder going to the charity. If anybody has any specific wants or don't wants, then pop in a message and we'll try and (ahem) cater for them.

  12. I’ve come to the conclusion I have far too much stuff, it’s time to let some things go and this is the first ... I’ve just had to admit that the music I play these days just doesn’t need those 400 watts of valve power. The sound of these Trace Elliot valve amps is legendary and it really does deserve the reputation. I spoke with Mr Green of Trace Elliot a few years ago, at the time he said the Trace pre amp was the most sampled valve bass sound in the world The controls are quite and the fan is strong keeping the six KT88’s nice and cool. The servicing engineer said the valves and transformers would cost at least £700.00 to replace, so this amp is realistically priced. Everything about it is quality, even the control knobs are solidly made, not the run of the mill stuff off a convenient parts shelf It has it’s own flight case (pictured) to keep everything in good order, probably the reason why it’s still in nice overall condition Collection really preferred, although I’m willing to drive a reasonable distance to meet and hand over in person I fang Q

  14. We doing our three peice acoustic offering back at the Ziegler Winery tomorrow. Always a pleasure to play there. They have a large "built in" engaged high-end clientle, I don't have to worry about the crowd. We're playing from 3:00-6:00. Our role is to provide background music however a lot of the folks are paying more attention to us than their wine. Daryl

  16. I also love the amps from back in the day, they just had something magical about them that Class D amps have lacked. I've tried a lot of Class D amps and have been generally disappointed but I did really like the Ampeg PF500, some of the MarkBass heads, the Ashdown MiBass and the Warwick Gnome Ipro 300. My favorite amp head ever was the Hartke HA7000, its weight was similar to a tank but what an incredible sounding amp head. I also played Glastonbury this year and had the chance to play through an old Trace Elliot 15" combo and it sounded incredible. It was like stepping back in time and the presence, punch and tone was just amazing. At my age, I'm super grateful for the Class D amps and lightweight cabs but to my ears, they've always been a compromise in tone but I'm happy to take that for ease of portability.

  17. Excellent condition - it’s done a couple of gigs. No longer needed as it’s not really suitable for new band. Great sound though and I’m tempted to keep but it’s taking up space. Not keen on couriers after some bad experiences- Collection/ meet up halfway within reasonable distance.

  18. LeCompte makes some interesting pickups, with those triple pole pieces. They were on my radar through NoTreble, who made their creations Bass of the Week several times. This one stood out to me, I love the body shape which appears to blend the offset waist of the Jazz Bass and something a bit Wal or Shergold like. LeCompte Electric Bass - SHR - Short Scale Interestingly, they spec this one as a 30.3" scale model.

  19. I bought this a few years back from a BC member. When I bought it, it had been refretted, had a BadAss ii fitted and pickups and pots changed. I changed the Nordstrabd pickup for a more period correct Monty’s which is modelled after a 1970’s model. It sounds incredible and I love the neck. It’s a handful but not too wide at 40mm at the nut. It’s a heavy one at approx 11.5 lbs. Comes with a Mono bass sleeve. Can meet, or deliver within a sensible distance. Really don’t want to post it. Trades wise, Musicman Stingray 2/3 band eq considered with money my way .

  20. Their reputation is justified by direct experience. They didn't suddenly become bad mics they just got superceded by 60 years of development, including by Shure. Materials technology has just moved on and. They are still incredibly reliable mics and sound just the way they did back in the 60's. You can still even buy the old 'Elvis' mic. They are still gloriously easy to sing with and for anyone with a strong voice they don't give too many feedback problems. Their soft focus sound will sometimes veil a few wrinkles in the voices of poor singers like me. Mainly though people like them because they are familiar. Using a mic is a very personal thing, probably more so than using the same bass and experience lets you use the mic to do things vocally you would need to re-learn if you change. The SM58's colour your vocals, they aren't flat response lose some of the highs and quite a lot of midrange detail. The first time I got a direct test of this was years ago when a singers SM58 went down mid song when I was mixing for her band. I swapped it for an AKG D5 sitting unused on a stand. It was like the sun had come out all the details in her voice revealed. In several bands now I've had singers borrow my Senny 935 to 'try out' and had to crowbar it out of their hands at the end of rehearsals. All of them went out and eventually bought new mics. To be fair to the original SM58 it was the lead that was faulty I've got friends who drive around in VW Beetles and one who drives a Hillman Imp and sometimes a vintage 2CV. They absolutely love them and I'm tempted by a Morris Traveller whenever I see one in good condition. Shure will go on making SM58's so long as people buy them but there's a reason why they make the Beta58. I don't think anyone 'has it in' for the 58 or is fooled by the clones, we just don't want people spending that much money on a mic when they can get better for less.

  21. *** Now SOLD *** Hi Folks, This is a bit of a feeler to be honest, but I'm thinking of moving on this fabulous Tokai Hardpuncher PB80 GS which, according to the online databases, was a 1979 / 1980 model. These 'lawsuit' era Tokai P Basses are very highly regarded, as one quote I found on Talkbass said: "... They were as good as the actual Fenders of that era, but more consistent. A Seventies Tokai is a legit vintage bass." There's a lot of info out there on them for anyone interested: https://www.tokaiforum.com/threads/the-earliest-hard-puncher-basses.26472/page-2 Price I'd like £475 or near offer for it, and am not looking for trades at this time. Specs/Condition etc Ash 1-piece body, maple neck, maple fingerboard and it's pretty much all 'stock' apart from what looks like a replacement, Gotoh style bridge. As can be seen in the photos, it's most definitely had a life and been very well used, so it's not a case queen. That said, the electrics need a bit of a clean and it could do with a restring... But, as it is, it plays really well; the frets/fingerboard are in good condition, the truss rod works as it should, and it sounds great - i.e., warm, fat, funky, rocky P bass tones and that nice zingy 'snap' you get from a maple neck! ! 😁 Which brings me to it's weight ; according to my fairly un-scientific weighing method, it's 4.5 kg or 9.9 lbs. Not light I know, but as I've always liked ash-bodied basses, that sort of weight in a bass has never troubled me... YMMV of course. Provenance One additional point of interest, this used to belong to the late, and much-missed, Nick Smith, aka 'Doctor_Bass', and as such, it has more than a little sentimental value to me. Nick was the last person to set it up by the way. Reason for sale But I'm not really using it due to having too many other basses - a few of which get used all the time - hence why listing it here for sale. It's a player's bass, and really does need to used... Collection etc Happy for anyone interested to come and test it out here in Potton, Central East Bedfordshire. Tea/coffee /Basschat chat in plentiful supply.. For many reasons, I do not want to post this. But in terms of meeting up, I'd be happy to arrange something reasonably local to me (within 30-40 miles), or somewhere in and around North West London where I work. Whatever - I'm sure something can be worked out if the need arises. Any questions, please ask, and thanks for looking as always. 👍 Cheers Nik

  22. I recently got this Aqua Sparkle special 2nd hand from Bass Direct. It's a 2020 build and came with a hipshot extender installed. I've always liked the way Stingrays play, and loved the sound of them when other people played them, but for some reason, with the older 2 and 3EQ I could never get a sound I was happy with out of one. This was a bit of a stab in the dark, but it's definitely paid off. I was hoping that the new 18v pre would work for me and I'm happy to say so far so good. Also who doesn't love a sparkle finish?

  26. Let's put some perspective on this. I've just paid £84 for a GK to be inspected and diagnosed. Tony (fab chap who knows his techy stuff at a level most of us could never achieve) is selling a top notch, recently serviced one for £200. And it's got a 2x10 with bi-amping and wheels included. Surely, this should be nominated for BassChat Bargain of the Year 2025. It's a gem.

  28. Now, the upcoming HZB4 looks a bit better to me, though a 5-string would be preferable. The changes from the HNB5 are subtle e.g. the pickguard is not quite as mad and isn't under half the controls. The rear doesn't have a cavity all the way under the bridge. These pics are the Satin Silver (top) and Gloss Aura Pearl (rear) finishes, it's also expected in Satin Black.

  29. 10cc were the first band I ever saw - Brum Odeon, September 1978. They were brilliant. I'll be at their Birmingham show next year - I think I've seen them (and Graham Gouldman's solo shows) about thirty times. I've never seen a bad gig. Sadly, I got into them too late to see the original line up, and I'm incredibly jealous of anyone who did. Their seventies albums are almost all superb. "Sheet Music" and "How Dare You" are about as good as Pop music will ever get. Unbelievably, my band got to support GG at a rain soaked outdoor gig in Manchester in 2023. When he walked in to our shared dressing room, I was reticent to speak to him. What if he turned out to be a Diva? Well, he wasn't. He was a lovely chap, and we had a very geeky chat about bass guitars while I tried not to burst into tears. Later that year, I interviewed Kevin Godley (via Zoom) about his brilliant solo album 'Muscle Memory'. He was ace. Funny and clever and sharp as a nail. GG is also one of the most underrated bassists ever. He's up there with McCartney for me.

  36. Now, that gives me an idea. We've been using "Sonic Visualiser" the last few weeks at uni - it's free and strangely addictive. The first 3/4 of the image is my octave mandolin with lovely stacked harmonics. The last quarter is me speaking. This was a recording using the built-in XY mic on a Zoom H8.

  39. As the Basschat community has always been fantastically supportive in checking out new music, we released our first brand new music in over a year. “Gloss” is out today via Ray Records and streaming on all the usual platforms. As always, we collaborated with Haunting the Atom to make this fun video. For anyone wanting a bit more background, it’s influenced by the post punk bands of our youth. I wanted a Stooges / Velvet Underground simplicity to the music (one note solo and bass line) but with an intelligent lyric. It isn’t typical of next year’s forthcoming third album and is probably the rockiest track we’ve written. Filmed in my house (which stunk of incense for several days afterwards), we had a blast doing this.

  43. I'd not call myself an expert, but I can offer a bit of insight here. There's not a lot of standardisation regarding how amplifier power is measured. Some spec sheets will state "at the onset of clipping", others will define it at 0.1% THD others at 1%. The fact of the matter is, once you're starting to clip the THD rises very quickly, so there's not much difference in the measured power whether it's quoted at 0.1% or 1% - certainly not enough to account for the discrepancy between 300W and 500W. Something that really confuses the issue is that volume controls are not calibrated, so you have no idea where clipping is. To make matters worse the control law of volume controls vary a lot, too. Even if the gain of two amplifiers is the same with their volume control maxed out, their gain at 50% might still be wildly different. (When I worked at HH, it was believed that our midlands based rival were "cheating" by using linear rather than logarithmic volume contols. At low volume settings these give much more gain than logarithmic controls and it's easy to mistake this for being louder or more powerful!) Then we have the sensitivity of speaker cabs which vary wildly and this can have a huge effect on the actual acoustic power that's being generated. Which is to say it's all very complicated and unless you can calibrate the gain of everything any subjective comparisons of "power" or "volume" are pretty meaningless. That's not to say anyone is wrong about whatever their favourite amp/cabinet is, just that any comparisons with another bit of kit in terms of volume may not be very valid. (In the Hi-Fi world it's generally reckoned that you need to gain match to within 0.1dB to make any valid sound quality comparisons. 0.1dB is the difference between 100W and 103W!) Hope this is of interest and maybe even help, too!

  44. For sale is my Fender Player ii Modified Active Precision in Metallic Forest Green. I bought it brand new in July as a backup to my main bass for playing Glastonbury this year but in the end I didn't need to take one and it stayed at home. It's never left the house so has never been gigged or even been to a rehearsal and has only been played briefly at home a couple of times. It still has the original Fender strings on it but I have removed the film that was covering the scratchplate. The bass is in mint condition and sounds and plays really well but there is a tiny little mark near the neck pocket near the bottom heal but it can't be seen without looking for it. I really struggled with what to buy for a backup and had my heart set on the Fender Vintera ii Telecaster bass but after comparing it to this bass in Anderton's, I was blown away by it and ended up buying it. The colour is also amazing and it comes with the Fender gig bag that came with the bass and the tags/truss rod key. I'm a fretless bassist 99% of the time and as I'm not playing fretted in anything and I'm unlikely to be, then I should really let this go to a home where it was be used and enjoyed. These are £949 at Andertons so I've priced it at £750. Collection and trial is available from GU15 or courier at buyers cost.
