franzbassist started following Payson flats on a Dingwall - any experiences?

I am interested in trying Payson flats on my Dingwall 5. Standard tuning. Can anyone help me with the sort of tension and feel they have? Are they super high tension? Thanks.

Just to set expectations.... the beginner parts are simple and I'll be involved in three pieces on the gig. And it's much harder than learning the sax, which I started in my early 50s

Personal nostalgia - I did a gig with an Essex singer called Helen Abbey that featured some great tunes including Lulu's 'To Sir With Love' from the Sidney Poitier film of the same name. The track has been credited to several bass players but my instinct says Bob Lang. Don't hit me with a 1,000 'no, it was....' posts because, 'Frankly, my dear. I don't give a damn'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/to-sir-with-love-theme-song-lulu/

So, I watched the 1st episode (I think there are a couple more?). It was from Hooky's perspective, which was someone who started in the mid-70s and thought punk was great musicianship. Love Will Tear Us Apart is of it's time; if only Jumpin' Jack Flash hadn't stolen the bass line. -

CPC Farnell? V https://cpc.farnell.com/c/splitters/iec-splitters Studiospares used to be good for this sort of stuff before the takeover, they used to do a sort of IEC daisy chain thing. Terralec are good for leads but nothing very useful listed there as far as I could see at the moment.

Sometimes notes that “dont fit” with a key signature work really well, but a note played out of time never works.

Apologies - I saw my drummer friend last night and we were talking about both the drum and bass series’ that Sky produced. I mentioned about the Neil Peart thing and he said it wasn’t Neil Peart after all, it was Cozy Powell that wasn’t mentioned. A slightly less glaring omission, but as we know from the bass series, only a small percentage of known players get mentioned. -
I’ve already got one of those GZR on my American vintage 2 bass and to be honest there isn’t a lot between them.
-
Yep... Singing the rhythms, pitched, to yourself, is a good way to get the Basslines into your head (and under your fingers). But I would always trip myself up with non-pitched ghost notes. Then years ago, I started to listen to Bobby McFerrin who is great at ghosting notes.

As new, only used once and in the original box as you can see from the pictures. Don’t know why but I preferred my Sadowsky pre-amp. As you would expect, this unit is in immaculate condition as it was only in the bass for a few weeks. All in the original box. Technical info: The J-Core preamp takes our widely acclaimed Flexcore Onboard Bass Preamp to the next level - now in a hassle-free Jazz Bass plate drop-in design. No modifications, no soldering, just pure performance. Powered by the incredibly flexible and supremely musical Mike Pope-designed preamp with a 4-band EQ, the J-Core puts tonal control at your fingertips. With internally selectable EQ points for each band and refined signal path enhancements, it’s designed to bring out the best in every note you play. All this, plus a 9-volt battery, fits neatly into your existing Jazz Bass control cavity. Effortless design meets exceptional sound. We’ve swapped out traditional jumper-style selectors inside the J-Core for intuitive rocker-style mini switches. These make it easier than ever to fine-tune the frequency centres of each of the 4 EQ bands, allowing you to customize the EQ to match your bass’s unique voice and your personal tonal preferences. With selectable frequencies at 46Hz or 90Hz, 330Hz or 473Hz, 600Hz or 900kHz, and 6kHz or 10kHz, the J-Core offers precise control to shape your sound exactly how you like it. Additional switches allow for 0, 3, 6, or 8 dB of output gain. A hallmark of a truly versatile Jazz Bass is its passive tone control. Some players prefer a subtle tone roll-off that preserve’s midrange presence, while others lean toward a darker, more classic passive tone. The J-Core comes stock with a .022 Cap and can be easily customized with an additional through-hole parallel capacitor. For years, the Flexcore has set the benchmark for players seeking unparalleled fidelity, clarity, and warmth from their active instruments. Until now, however, it wasn’t available as a drop-in replacement for Jazz Basses. With the J-Core, you can finally bring the renowned flexibility and performance of the Flexcore into the Fender universe— elevating your sound without changing what you love about your instrument. FREQUENCY SPECIFICATIONS Treble: +/- 15dB at 6kHz or 10kHz Hi Mid: +/- 15dB at 600Hz or 900Hz Lo Mid: +/- 12dB at 330Hz or 473Hz Bass: +/- 12dB at 46Hz or 90Hz This Trickfish J-Core is the 4-band active preamp version with SIDE mounted jack. Currently for sale in Bass Direct for £285 but you can buy this one for just £200 delivered in mainland UK.

These were used just once but didn’t suit the bass that they went into, so they are ‘as new’. These are Fender American Standard size: · Neck 101.5mm long x 18.6mm wide · Bridge 104.6mm long x 18.6mm wide A brand new set of these will set you back £200 from Bass Direct, I’m asking just £140 delivered mainland UK.

How about a Nano 2? Convenient size and weight, solid build, decent amount of power, reasonable price-tag for a third amp, and I would have thought easy enough to justify carrying as insurance even when you're predominantly on IEMs. The earlier Nano 300 and the Nano 2 have been my main gigging amps since 2018ish, and as a past user of LM2, F1, LM800, LM3 and various combos, I'd say they have 'the sound'. They don't have the VLE/VPF filters, but MB are willing to ship a gigging amp without them and I always turn them to 'off' anyway, so neither of us appear to believe they're integral to the aforementioned signature sound.

So that's the reason for the stupidly large headstock on Fenders? Cheaper than changing the neck construction, I grant you, but it's a decision that resulted in a fugging ugly design. I am intrigued though. How do you determine if a neck design will have a dead spot, and where? Or know that putting more mass at one end will change that?

For those wanting to play Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, don't use the Trinity Grade 7 score, as it's in the wrong key (Db when the original is in Ab, furthermore there is no pedal and most of the opening chords are wrong, "Europeanised and simplified", and I stopped there...), but buy the official score here instead: https://score-en.sitesakamoto.com/products/merry_christmas_mr_lawrence_piano_solo

Cool thread. I'd add one more ingredient to this. 'Ghost notes'. Ghost notes are like ligaments, they bind rythmns together.
