It's impossible to overplay bass. I've found it's not so much an instrument as a person. There's always someone who's got to be making a noise all the time. Candidates from my experience have been percussionist, gob-iron player, and acoustic guitarist.

It's an interesting area - the Krivo magnetic pickups manage to be a little clearer and more "acoustic" sounding than older designs, presumably using some of the same tricks that modern acoustic guitar soundhole pickups do (controlled microphonics, lower inductance, neo magnets). But no commercial magnetic pickup for bass has cracked the bow response issue yet - because the string vibration is dampened in one plane when bowing (up/down relative to the pickup position), you get unpredictable volume and weird barky attack when bowing with most magnetic pickups. There are a couple of cello systems that place polepieces in between the strings so that they sense the movement in that lateral plane more, but I haven't seen that tried on bass.

Well, there’s a particular technique that Jamerson used, which is more commonly found among jazz musicians. This technique is called an ‘enclosure,’ and utilising it in your bass lines will enable you to play smoother, more hip-sounding lines. I understand where your coming from tho I beg to differ... cite "Darling Dear" and a whole tone of additional Motown lines as one collective example. Simple can actually get in the way of the musicality of the piece. The best line will support the melodic shape of the tune and can be either busy or simple.

The chances of any gear list I write now being the same in November are about nil All I will say is that when it comes to travelling hundreds of miles to attend a bass bash, my motto is "go big, or go home"...

Everyone tends to bring something. There'll be enough kit to keep people happy. On the subject of the bass shootout thing, it would be nice to have a list of basses ahead of the curve so I can do some printed sheets for marking.

If folks want a pickup winding article ... of course I can oblige ... I've done a pine of historic pickup rewind photo articles over on the Fretboard Forum over the years ... and a good number of them were for bass ... so if I get anything juicy I'll post here for certain. Also if folks want to have a crack at building magnetic pickups for their steel string double basses I'm happy to come up with a design I could help those interested make 🙂
