Ah, see, I'm definitely not a fan of super bright strings. It's always been dark and mellow for me. Why I've never liked steels. Thanks for the help there

Adding another cab to my rig suggestions please
Sean replied to BassYerbouti's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm using an LFSys.co.uk Monaco. 60 litres, 14kg, 600w. It goes very loud and you get plenty of low end. There are other spec LFSys cabs available and using a pair of 10" Monza or Goodwood cabs would give a very versatile rig. Remember that these aren't "normal spec" drivers and the cabs and x-overs are high end and designed specifically for delivering what we need as bassists. We're rapidly moving away from the 10" drivers sound like this, 12" drivers sound like that mentality of the past. Some of us attended a blind comparison of speakers/drivers recently and the results were very eye-opening. My amps are barely ticking over at stupid volumes through the Monaco in decent sized venues but the most important factor with these is that you can hear yourself beautifully from any angle because the dispersion is so wide and high. -

There's loads of good players I don't like because I heard about them so looked them up and said no thanks . Like someone else said, people who " never heard of them " are saying more about themselves than the player -
The tuners aren't genuine MM ones, but that period used Schaller BM tuners. So I bought some Schaller BM tuners in black, everything lined up and they were direct replacements. It's just they have a schaller branding on the rear rather than musicman. I can live with that!

You can spend a lot of time looking up all the bass players mentioned on here! I, for instance have no clue about many 70s US or even British rock bassists, and I haven't really got much interest because I tend not to like most of the music wot they have Dunn.. I spose you could call that wilful ignorance! However, there's a whole genre of music (and by extension, bass players) that is just completely dismissed on BC - jazz! So there's amazing players that the majority on BC would have no clue about (too many notes, sounds like a typewriter falling down the stairs, it's unmusical etc) such as Shahzad Ismaily, or Fima Ephron, or Kim Baker, or Erik Sanko, or Paul "Tubbs" Williams... -

Thanks for the help all. That's at least two votes for the passive di, two votes for the Behringer ADI, no votes at all for any kind of amp, several mentions of soundhole covers and even a recommendation for a piece of gear I already own and specifically ruled out in the OP. Seriously, there is a consensus and I really appreciate it. I think the direction is to stick with a passive di for now and see if a cheap preamp comes up or maybe have him buy the Behringer further down the line. Oh well. I am surprised the inbuilt preamps and tuners are actually useful on gigging stages, but hey, that's why I asked! Possible side quest for a sound hole cover but I know he is not interested in buying gear and I'll bet this is one those "don't need it until you do" things that people won't be convinced on until it's too late.
